Carmel Buckingham (3rd Dan) commenced training 19 years ago and is currently the highest graded woman in Riai Aikido. Carmel has trained in the USA with Sensei Shihan Robert Nadeau and attended many of his seminars over the years held throughout New Zealand.
Carmel founded the Auckland Riai Childrens Class with Sensei Danny McIntyre in 1995 at the Riai Ponsonby Dojo.
Carmel Sensei encourages students to be punctual at all times and when teaching beginners concentrates on basics and simplification. For more experienced students her emphasis is on presence and awareness at all times, this often involves training blind-folded and multiple surprise attacks from behind. She believes the dojo is a safe environment for this and a great opportunity for students never to let their guard down, thus developing their sixth sense.
Sensei Carmel currently teaches at the Riai Aikido Learning Centre in Auckland city.
